About

"Les portes de la connaissance, un vaisseau vers la Lumière" is a bronze, glass and metal sculpture by Jean-François LEMAIRE, installed at the Harmony residence in Rosières-près-Troyes.

A work for students. It was commissioned by Sébastien PARIS and his associates from the DESIMO company.

At the end of winter 2019, designed by Colomè & Nomdedeu Architects for the developer Desimo Immobilier, the Harmony residence will begin to emerge from the ground, a new development in the fields between the technology park district, with its engineering schools, and the town of Rosières. Since 2020, this circular building has housed students, often future researchers, inventors and engineers, close to their respective campuses.

As soon as the work began, Sébastien Paris, President of Desimo, asked Jean-François Lemaire to design and create a large sculpture for the courtyard of the residence, as a meaningful element, both structuring and convivial.

An allegorical work

"The Gates of Knowledge, a Vessel to the Light" is an allegory of study and knowledge, of cooperation and of the principles that can inspire and guide the learner.

Its location creates a new centrality in the courtyard of Harmony Residence, whose tower and heart are dedicated to the students as places of life and freedom. The large sculpture of arches and sails, with its characters ready to embark on a beautiful adventure, is intended to be a pleasant and dynamic companion to the daily life of the residents.

The work for the Harmony residence expresses the research themes dear to Jean-François Lemaire and which have been present in his plastic creations and his artistic and pedagogical actions for decades: elevation, light, memory, Time and the promotion of knowledge and know-how. He designed all the parts of the sculpture and produced the bronze and glass parts, entrusting the manufacture of the steel elements (base and arches) as well as the assembly to the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant CMD² in Estissac.
