About
In 1990, to mark the opening of the Institut Universitaire Rachi, the city of Troyes paid tribute to Rachi by inaugurating the "Rachi Memorial" with Elie Wiesel.
Created by sculptor Raymond Moretti, who wanted to create a "monument of light", this memorial marks the city's determination to maintain the spiritual values of Judaism that made it so rich in the Middle Ages.
This large sphere, 2.20m in diameter and 2.80m high, faces the Théâtre de Champagne, close to the former Jewish cemetery where Rachi was buried (the cemetery disappeared in the 16th century). It rests on a hexagonal granite base representing France. At the center of the black-and-white sphere, symbolizing opposites, is the acronym of Rachi. Originally, a beam of light pointed skywards from the center of the sphere, but this has now been removed to avoid interfering with air traffic.
