This is true, cats have been inspiring most of the famous proverbs (according to my friend Marmotte)!

Some of these proverbs are very well known, like: « Let the cat out of the bag », « When the cat is away, the mice will play » or « Time spent with cats is never wasted »…

But actually, dogs have been playing their part in sayings and languages all around the world, and many proverbs refer to them.

Alright, here I go! Let’s see if you know all of these expressions! (I will give you some explanations at the end of my article…)

  2. His bark is worse than his bite
  3. Like a dog with two tails
  4. Doggy style
  5. To be dog tired
  6. Puppy dog eyes
  7. Puppy love
  8. Every dog has its day
  9. To be in the dog-house
  10. It is raining cats and dogs
  11. To live long, eat like a cat, drink like a dog
  12. Beware of a silent dog and still water
  13. If you stop every time a dog barks, your road will never end.
  14. Dogs are man’s best friend

  1. Expression from the 16th century when shepherds were advised to train their dogs young. But the saying became famous and even appeared in James Bond Skyfall!
  2. About those who seem to have a strong personality but are actually very kind people.
  3. This is about being very very happy, like a dog wagging not only one tail but two!
  4. Well, this expression refers to… how dogs actually « do this »… let’s say it can be understood as having sex like a wild animal.
  5. When you really, really need a nap
  6. Way too cute to resist
  7. Teenagers’ love, infatuated love… rather a very cheesy kind of love
  8. Everyone has their time of glory
  9. When you are in someone’s bad books, when you are in trouble.
  10. This one refers to heavy, heavy rain.
  11. Try and stay healthy and fat
  12. Do not trust very quiet situations or people, as they can turn into the most violent ones
  13. Always move forward beside hard times and challenges
  14. This one is a saying we love, and we can only agree to this!
