About
The commune's name is known as Sanceium as early as 1107.
In the past, the village was called "Sancey", before becoming Sancey-Saint-Julien and then Saint-Julien, because of the relics of Saint Julien de Brioude preserved in the church. The name "les villas" (the villas) was added because of the many residences that have been used as holiday resorts since the 17th century, and not in reference to the Gallo-Roman villas. As there were 85 "Saint Julien" in France at the turn of the century, mail delivery was disrupted, and the town's municipal council, meeting on March 16, 1919, unanimously requested that Saint Julien be renamed "Saint-Julien-les-Villas". The town was renamed Saint-Julien-les-Villas by decree on August 5, 1919.
Saint-Julien enjoyed its heyday during the Age of Enlightenment, when Charles Perrault, Jean de la Fontaine, Boileau and Fontenelle were frequent visitors to the Château des Cours. Old local customs included the Feast of Saint Julien and Sundays by the water. People came here to picnic, relax, stroll and admire the beautiful waterside residences.
