About
It's clear from as far back as we can remember that Rosières près Troyes has long existed solely through its castle.
The precise dates of the castle and village foundations are not known, but according to historian Courtalon, the village really came into being in 1520, around the estate. According to other sources, the village already existed, as Pierre de Provins was already talking about it in 1520.
Some may believe that the name Rosières comes from the French rose gardens that occupied the château grounds, but this is not the case. According to the most credible hypotheses, a rosière, in the past, designated a marshy area "à Roseaux". So it was from the "Rosières" that constituted its estate that the château and its owners inherited the name, and that the village was subsequently named.
Today's Rosières is the result of the association of two villages, for not so long ago, a distinction was made between Rosières and Viélaines. It was on 17 pluviôse de l'an 3 (May 6, 1795) that the two communes were united.
Rosières-près-Troyes grew up alongside the city of Troyes throughout the Middle Ages. At the time, the town was limited to its castle and its estate. Contact with Troyes encouraged trade, thanks to the Champagne fairs.
Rosières remained sheltered from the storms of the French Revolution. There were some losses among the village's inhabitants, but infant mortality, the number of elderly people and numerous cases of illness were the only causes of this hecatomb. The commune had 136 inhabitants in 1787, but only 112 remained in 1790.
It was in 1919, on February 4, that the commune of Rosières received the addition "près Troyes".
Rosières is renowned for the diversity of its activities, both cultural and sporting, and for the density of its education.
For a commune of this size, a student can pursue his or her studies from kindergarten to Bac +4, without leaving Rosières.
