About
Pont-Sainte-Marie, with the hamlet of Pont-Hubert, has always been a bridgehead on the Seine. This position made the village the crossing point for many an army.
In Gallo-Roman times, it was the only bridge north of Troyes and an important crossroads for Roman roads.
The commune was successively named: Pons Sancte Marie in 1136, Pons Huberti in 1154, Pont Saincte Marie in 1292, Pons Humberti in the 13th century, Pons Beate Marioe in 1407, Pons Humbert in 1400, Pont de Saincte Marie in 1408, Pont Hubert in the 18th century and Pons Beate Marie prope Trecas in 1446.
The town of Pont-Sainte-Marie has made sustainable development one of the cornerstones of its policy. For example, it was the first town in the Aube department to build a 23-hectare eco-neighborhood, including a housing estate built exclusively of wood, to introduce horse-drawn garbage collection and to install electric charging stations for adapted vehicles.
Respect for biodiversity, another pillar of this sustainable development policy, is reflected in the preservation of Parc Lebocey, a 14-hectare green lung with a remarkable arboretum and protected fauna, thanks in particular to its classification as an LPO refuge. An educational and conservation orchard, the presence of beehives and the implementation of sustainable management, among others, complete this approach.
The town is also a leader in cutting-edge technologies, with the EUREKA College of the Future, and in the economic sphere, with one of the largest business parks in France, Tirverts-Ecrevolles, mainly dedicated to the food industry (wholesale market), two contact centers (more than 1,000 jobs) and the brand center: Mc Arthur Glen (with more than 90 stores) and Marques City, which attracts more than 2 million visitors a year, making it one of the largest factory outlet sites in Europe.
Special attention is also paid to young people. There are numerous facilities for children, including a bioclimatic crèche, nursery and elementary school, and a secondary school, enabling them to continue their education in the city. Two CFAs (apprentice training centers) and the AFPA (for adult vocational training) complete the range of services on offer.
The town also offers a wide range of cultural activities, with some 50 associations and a Maison de l'Animation et de la Culture, including a music school and a media library, offering a wide range of events, concerts and exhibitions.
