About

The commune is located 20 kilometers south of Troyes. Its main claim to fame is the Holy Shroud, which stayed here in the 14th century.

The shroud known as the Shroud of Turin was deposited in the collegiate church founded by Geoffroy de Charny, before being transferred to Chambéry and then Turin. It remained there from around 1355 to 1418, before being transferred to Saint-Hippolyte (Doubs) from 1418 to 1452.

To better inform visitors to Lirey about the discovery of the shroud known as the "Saint Suaire", panels have been installed in the chapel recalling who Geoffroy de Charny was and detailing the history of the shroud. A booklet is available for visitors at the town hall.

In the chapel, a fresco on the theme of dances of death was installed in September 2003.

Lirey has 2 associations: the Comité des fêtes and a hunting club.
