About

The commune of Lavau is located in the first ring to the north-east of the Troyes conurbation, 5 minutes from downtown Troyes, on the banks of the Melda river.

The RD 610 (north-eastern bypass) divides the village into two parts: Lavau and La Vallotte. It is also a gateway to Troyes, particularly for businesses located in the Ecrevolles zone.

Its rural character as you move away from the main artery, near the Lavau recreation area, creates a junction between housing and grazing, farming and forestry areas. This pattern is repeated at La Vallotte. The housing estates on either side of the Route Départementale (Route de Méry) are bordered by agricultural areas. Numerous housing estates have sprung up over the past fifteen years, due to the ever-increasing population and the proximity of Troyes to the city center.

Lavau is home to a lively community life, with a wide range of activities on offer, and the Lavau town hall is associated with the two neighboring communes for its music school.

The eastern part of Lavau is home to a variety of craft and commercial businesses. Most of these are located on a Zone d'Aménagement Concertée (ZAC). Since 2011, a number of retail outlets have opened nearby. Together, they generate over 600 jobs.

In spring 2002, Inrap was involved in a 5.6-hectare housing development project in the commune of Lavau, at Les Corvées. The preventive excavation operation, covering an area of 1.4 ha, uncovered a late Bronze Age - early Iron Age domestic settlement and a number of late Iron Age burials.
This operation, which in many respects is no different from other metal-age excavations in chalky Champagne, deserves to be published in the Revue Archéologique de l'Est for at least two reasons. Firstly, among the many salvage operations carried out in this area, these are recently excavated remains. Secondly, the Latenian funerary complex bears witness to practices as yet unknown in the region.
