About

Fays was first mentioned in 876. In 1879, it was a community of the intendance of Chalons. From January 29 to November 29, 1790, the commune was part of the canton of Auxon, then Saint-Phal.

Fays-la-Chapelle is the smallest village in the canton, covering just 58 hectares, and currently has a population of 141. It is located just off the RN 77, 23 km from Troyes in the direction of Auxerre.
Fays has always lived around and with the forest. Traces can be found of a revolt by the "faitas" in 1225, when the Templars tried to restrict the inhabitants' rights of use. They took up arms in the forest, cut down valuable timber and set fire to the Templars' barn. The change of name from Fays to Fays-la-Chapelle was authorized by decree on February 4, 1919. In the past, a distinction was made between Fays-la-Chapelle and Fays-hameau.
Today, Fays-la-Chapelle is a peaceful, modern and dynamic rural village, characterized by its rational development and pleasant lifestyle.

The "Notre-Dame de Fays la chapelle" chapel is a half-timbered structure built in 1828. Its stone and brick facade, topped by a campanile built in 1854, makes it unique in the region. Relatively modest in size, 16.40m long and 7.50m wide, it towers above its half-timbered neighbors. The church's simple interior is composed of a three-bay nave and a choir ending in a flat trompe l'oeil wall, with the niches of St. Joseph on the left and St. Anne and the Virgin Mary on the right.
The washhouse and its never-drying fountain, located at the lowest point of the village, attracts walkers.

The town hall, built in stone and brick like the front of the church, has just been enlarged by the current municipality in the style of the original building, to provide the commune's inhabitants with a better welcome.
A multi-purpose hall, located against the town hall, replaces the timber-framed school closed in 1974.

2 associations have been set up in the commune: Fays Loisirs and the Amicale des Pompiers et anciens pompiers. In addition, a home hairdresser and a fairground craftsman have set up shop here.
